Biographie
Steel Pulse se forme en 1975 à Birmingham en Angleterre. David Hinds, Ronald Stepper McQueen, Basil Gabbidon et Selwyn Brown sont tous issus de famille d'immigrés et sont victimes dès leur enfance du racisme. Leur majeure influence musicale est l'artiste philosophe reggae Winston Rodney, alias Burning Spear. Le groupe se forme à l'initiative de Ronald Stepper McQueen (bassiste) mais personne ne sait vraiment jouer d'un instrument. Steel Pulse engage donc le batteur Steve Grizzly Nisbett, le percussionniste Phonso Martin et le chanteur Michael Riley. Ils doivent attendre trois ans et l'arrivée du mouvement punk et new wave pour trouver un public. Ils font les premières parties de The Clash, The Stanglers et The Police.
Au contact de ces groupes, Steel Pulse apprend à rendre sa musique plus professionnelle. Leurs trois premiers albums sont produits par le Jamaïquain Karl Pitterson qui a travaillé avec Bob Marley. En 1982, Steel Pulse sort l'album True Democracy qui reçoit un bon accueil aux Etats-Unis contrairement à l'Angleterre. Basil Gabbidon et Mc Queen quittent le groupe et, à la fin des années 80, le son de Steel Pulse devient commercial sans pour autant avoir du succès avec les albums State of Emergency et Victims. En 1994, le groupe revient avec Vex, album plus roots, puis, en 1997, il signe Rage and Fury et, en 1999, il enregistre le live Living Legacy.
